“As a systems change oriented nonprofit focused on scaling up watershed-level water resiliency solutions, we don’t lack for big ideas. For example, in 2019, we set the goal of 10x-ing our impact in 10 years. But identifying the strategic financial approach, structure, and decision-making constructs to make that happen has been an ongoing challenge for us. This summer, we set about identifying and then working through our internal barriers to achieving that scale, but this time hired a consultant to help us get there.
Bringing in Nthandco gave us the structure, fresh perspective and focus to tackle these issues and ultimately drive them over the finish line. Nicole was able to quickly get up to speed, then help break down old or inadequate ways of thinking. She clearly had a method, but let our facts and organization guide her, and made sure that we kept challenging ourselves to improve.
Over a couple of months of intense work, she was able to get to a transformative destination that likely would not have been achievable without her shaking things up for us, or that at a minimum, would have taken us much longer to find. Ultimately, we closed our engagement with her with the improved systems, structures, data flows, mindset and alignment that will make it possible for the organization to support ourselves at a bigger, faster scale.
Specifically, she helped us develop a much more powerful way to assess seemingly different projects against each other (financially and mission-based); she helped us identify, fix and integrate important data flows into a much more accurate, timely and powerful tracking and reporting dashboard; she pushed us to greatly enhance our financial reporting package; she helped us identify and fix structural inefficiencies in our teams and operating structure; and she helped us break down some of the people challenges that can sometimes be hard to see within an organization but that can be seen easily by a third party.
